North Cyprus

A corner of Earth touched by heaven

Welcome to Northern Cyprus, as the third largest island in the Mediterranean ,Cyprus has been occupied by a succession of civilizations over the past 2000 years, all of whom have left there mark. History abounds everywhere, from the three crusader castles built in the time of Richard the Lionheart, to the Roman ruins at Salamis, each conquering empire has contributed to the beauty and culture of this remarkable island.

CLIMATE

Northern Cyprus is blessed with the most pleasing climate in the whole of Europe. The winters are mild, and rarely extend beyond February, and with over 300 days of sunshine a year, the temperatures can reach into the 70s as early as March. In April and May, Northern Cyprus is at its most beautiful, with fields of wild flowers in full bloom, and the weather is not unlike that of a good English summer. June, July and August are the hottest months and ideal for sun worshippers. Not surprisingly, September and October are the most popular months, when the weather is wonderfully warm (rarely below 80'F), but the evening are cooler.

GEOGRAPHY

The geography of Northern Cyprus is characterized by a unique blend of mountains, plains and beaches. The kyrenia range, with its magnificent jagged limestone peaks, the highest of which is Mount Ichova at 3357 ft. runs along most of the coastline to form a startling backdrop. To the east of the island the mountain range loses height as it extends along the narrow peninsula known as the Karpaz ( or the panhandle ). It is here that the best beaches of Cyprus are to be found; long wide empty bays of the purest white sands that stretch for miles. To the south of the Kyrenia range lies Lefkosa (Nicosia), the capital of Northern Cyprus with a population of 38,500. The other major centres are Guzelyurt (population 11,350) and two resort towns Girne (Kyrenia) with a population of 22,00 and Gazimagusa (Famagusta) with a population of 20,000.
