Ruins of Ayios Philon

Close to the site of ancient Karpasia, are the ruins of the 10th century Ayios Philon church. Philon was the saint who converted the people of Karpaz to Christianity in the 4th century. Built on the foundations of former Hellenistic and Roman periods, this early 5th century church comprises of three parts: a basilica court surrounded by columns, a bishops place, and sundry buildings. Colourful mosaics also adorn the floor. Following Arab raids, this original church was destroyed in a fire and a domed church was built in its place in the 12th century.
